Relief in Need

 

The Relief in Need charity has its origins in a Fuel Allotment charity set up in 1817, when the owner of Minley Estate donated a large plot of wooded land in Sandy Lane. As the name suggests, the Fuel Allotment charity provided fuel (in the form of logs) to the poor in the local area.

In 1970 the Fuel Allotment land was sold for around £250,000 and the Hawley Almshouses and Relief in Need Charity was established. Part of the proceeds from the sale were used to build Hawley Garden Cottages, the remainder was invested so that the income could be used to provide grants to people in need within the Parish of Hawley. In 2006 the Trustees expanded the geographic area for potential beneficiaries of Relief in Need, from the Parish of Hawley to people living within Hart District and Rushmoor Borough Councils.

Examples of grants made by the Trustees in the last few years include: funding towards school trips for low-income families, purchase of special equipment for disabled persons, contribution to specialist medical assessments, etc.

We are unable to consider applications direct from individuals - they must come via a professional body, e.g. health professionals, schools, other charities or voluntary organisations etc., acting on their behalf. As you will appreciate, the Charity only has a limited amount of funds and therefore the Trustees are not able to help with every request received.

Decisions relating to grant applications are made at our quarterly Trustee meetings.
